A free alternative to AutoCAD for plumbing layouts
Does the job actually need CAD?
CAD is a drawing tool, and its subject is geometry: lines with exact coordinates, layers, scale, a sheet that prints the way a standard says it should. That is a real and demanding job — and on a plumbing project there are about five things that genuinely need it.
- A file in DWG or DXF, because a designer, a contractor or an authority asked for one.
- A drawing printed to scale, with a title block and dimensions to a drafting standard.
- Documentation that goes through approval, where the drawing is a legal document rather than a picture.
- Geometry that is not pipes: the building plan itself, a plot, a plant room, a bracket to be cut.
- Your own layers and standards laid over an existing plan that already lives in CAD.
If none of the five is on your list, you are not looking for CAD. You are looking for a way to lay pipes out and know what to buy — a smaller job with a much easier answer.
The alternatives, and where each one stops
“Alternative” splits by what the tool knows about. Free CAD knows lines. A modeller knows shapes. A diagram editor knows boxes and arrows. A builder over a parts catalogue knows fittings: which ones exist, and which of them screws into which.

What changes when the tool knows the parts
That is the whole of the difference, and it shows on the first layout rather than after a course.
Moving a job across from CAD
Take the dimensions off whatever plan you have — the CAD drawing, the developer's plan or a tape measure. Only the distances between fixtures and the routing along the walls travel; the drawing itself does not.
Lay the run out of real parts, starting at the inlet or the boiler and working towards the fixtures, so that every end is chosen by what it has to screw into.
Look at the joints the builder refused: each refusal is either a wrong size or a missing adapter, and it is cheaper to argue with it now than at the till.
Take the parts list to the shop as it stands — names, sizes and quantities all come from that same layout.
Send the layout to whoever is fitting it as a link, so the discussion is about what is on screen rather than about what you meant.
What does not travel is DWG, in either direction. If someone needs a file in their format, that piece of the work stays in CAD — and it is usually a smaller piece than it looks.
What we do not replace
We do not output DWG or DXF, do not print to scale, do not produce approval documentation, do not calculate hydraulics to code and do not do drainage — the last one is a decision, not a gap waiting to be filled.
What is left is the part most people were actually searching for: a layout built from real catalogue parts, mismatches caught as you draw, and a shopping list counted from the drawing. For a flat, a cabin or an ordinary house that is the whole job. For a drawing that goes through approval it is not, and no free tool changes that.
Common questions
Is there a free alternative to AutoCAD?
Several, and they split by what you need it for. For drafting and DXF there is free 2D CAD such as LibreCAD or QCAD; for modelling, FreeCAD; for a plumbing layout with real parts and a shopping list, a browser builder like ours. What no free tool gives you is approval-grade documentation.
Can I draw a plumbing layout without CAD?
For a flat, a cabin or an ordinary house, yes — and usually faster. What matters in a plumbing layout is that neighbouring parts mate by thread and diameter and that nothing is missing from the list, and neither of those is what CAD is about.
Does AutoCAD have anything for plumbing?
Autodesk sells industry toolsets and separate MEP-oriented products, and they are aimed at professionals producing documentation. They are very good at that and heavy for one flat: both the licence and the learning assume you draw for a living.
Will a fitter accept a layout that is not a DWG?
A fitter needs a clear layout with dimensions and a list of parts, not a file format. DWG is asked for by designers and approval bodies, and by them specifically.
Is free CAD enough for a house?
For the drawing, yes. For the decisions — which pipe, which adapter, how much of it to buy — no: free CAD knows lines, so those decisions stay with you, a thread table and your own arithmetic.
